As we stand on the cusp of a new year, the paradoxical relationship we share with technology becomes increasingly apparent. In a world where we’re both enchanted and wary of its influence, the approaching digital transformation in 2024 holds the promise of evolution and innovation.
Reflecting on the past year, dominated by the unsettling prominence of deepfake videos, we are reminded of the dual nature of technology—the capacity to awe and unnerve.
With machine intelligence at the helm of our lives, the collective hope is that technology’s trajectory in 2024 will steer towards sustainable progress. As we navigate the uncharted waters of the digital realm, the challenge remains – how can technology elevate us without leaving a detrimental footprint on our lives and the world we inhabit? The answers, elusive yet essential, lie in the unfolding pages of time.
AI Beyond the hype
In mid-2022, the term “artificial intelligence” (AI) became an integral part of our lexicon, underscoring the inevitability of tech proficiency. The looming threat of obsolescence for those not versed in technology came to the forefront, with potential job loss as a stark consequence.
Looking ahead to the coming year, there’s an anticipation for a greater familiarity with AI, fostering a sense of comfort rather than intimidation. The prevalence of generative AI in everyday applications, such as search engines and communication tools, signals a normalisation of its presence in our daily lives, making it an indispensable part of the evolving technological landscape.
“AI is not just the future; it’s our present reality. As an electrical engineer, I appreciate its utility. When wielded with expertise, AI significantly alleviates work pressure. In 2024, a widespread realisation will dawn upon people — AI is indispensable. It seamlessly integrates into our lives, blurring the lines between the real and virtual realms,” said Nishant Patnaik, a Bangalore-based IT firm.
Eco-tech triumph
In the upcoming year, technology is set to metamorphose into an eco-friendly force. The rise of electric cars, bikes, and various transport systems is on the horizon, promising cleaner streets. Beyond transportation, the concept of a circular economy is gaining traction in technological realms. A paradigm shift in manufacturing is underway, focusing not just on waste reduction but on enhancing usability, marking a pivotal step towards a sustainable future.
“In 2024, I’m opting for an electric car for a hassle-free experience. I prefer to steer clear of the burden of refuelling with petrol and diesel, aligning with a more sustainable choice for the environment.,” said Pratik Kumar, an IT engineer in Bangalore.
Defending the future
In an era where individuals and businesses alike find themselves at the mercy of cyber threats, urgent measures are imperative to shield against potential attacks. Research paints a daunting picture, predicting the staggering cost of cyberattacks to soar to a jaw-dropping $10 trillion by the close of 2024. The critical need of the hour is a robust mechanism buttressed by technology, steering businesses away from the precipice of cyber harm.
Enter the era of automated cyber defence, harnessing the power of Artificial Intelligence to fortify security protocols and deploy proactive measures. Brace yourself, for the year ahead will witness cybersecurity ascend to the forefront of global concerns, demanding vigilant attention and innovative solutions.
Tech’s quantum leap
Quantum computing, born from the enigmatic realm of quantum physics, promises a revolutionary leap in data processing. Operating through the principles of entanglement and superposition, quantum computers wield unparalleled capabilities.
Sectors like banking and financial services are embracing quantum technology, leveraging AI for fraud detection, risk management, and high-frequency trading. The impending year, 2024, is poised to witness the widespread impact of quantum computing, extending its benefits across diverse domains—from drug recovery and meteorology to cryptography and optimizing traffic flow in sprawling urban landscapes.
The quantum dawn is set to usher in transformative possibilities in the intricate tapestry of computational sciences.
“After one-and-half years in Bangalore, traffic snarls are notorious, consuming valuable time. While technology is indispensable in our lives, I recently pondered if it could alleviate this urban woe. Discovering that quantum computing holds potential for easing traffic congestion is promising. I eagerly anticipate its implementation in Bangalore and urge the government to consider this innovative solution promptly,” said Simran, a staffer in city-based NGO.
